Be Mine Bonanza: Day 2-Painted Muslin Hearts

Hey! I'm Gwen from Gwenny Penny, and I'm so excited to be here today to share my tutorial as part of Kindra's Be Mine Bonanza. I love to sew, so today I'm going to show you how to make painted muslin hearts.

They have many decorative uses and are really easy to make. Let's get started!

Materials and supplies needed:

  • muslin

  • batting

  • thread

  • red acrylic craft paint

  • foam paintbrush

  • optional embellishments: buttons, twine, rubber stamps, permanent fabric marker, glue

  • Instructions:
Create a heart template. I drew mine in Word and printed it on a piece of freezer paper, but you can also draw a heart by hand on a piece of paper or cardboard and cut it out. My template was 6" tall and 5" wide.

Using your template, cut out two hearts from muslin and one from batting.

Pin your three layers together in this order... batting, muslin, muslin. I used a water soluble fabric pen to draw an outline around my outer piece of muslin about 1/4" from the edge. It's not necessary, but it makes it easier to sew evenly around both curves of the heart.

Sew around your layered heart about 1/4" from the outside edge. Leave a 2-3" gap along one straight edge for turning. Clip the point and curves of the heart, and turn it right side out.

Press the heart, making sure to press in the raw edges of the opening.

Topstitch around your heart about 1/8" from the outside edge.

Now it's time to paint! I used plain old acrylic craft paint that I had in my stash.

Use a foam brush to paint one side and the edges of your heart. Make sure you get everything covered with the first coat. Maybe it was just my paint, but any areas that got paint on them after the first coat dried looked uneven. Once the first side and edges dry, turn it over and paint the other side of your heart.

Now it's time to embellish. I decided to add a message to my heart. I took a scrap of muslin and sewed a rectangle on it. Then I trimmed the edges of the fabric to about 1/8" from the outside edges of my stitches, and I frayed the edges of the fabric.

Next I got out my rubber stamps. I bought a set of letter stamps for $1 at Michael's a while back, and I've gotten a lot of use out of it. When I stamp on fabric, I use a permanent, waterproof pen to coat each letter stamp. I feel like I have better control over the ink on the stamp when I use this method.

To finish off my heart, I glued my "love" tag onto the front and then glued a small button on top of that.

I made another patch for a second heart using my letter stamps and a little matryoshka doll stamp.

Now you've got this cute little heart that you can use in several different ways. You can glue a loop of twine on the back and hang it on a door or on the wall.

You can add it to a wreath.

Or you can make a couple of hearts and use them as bowl fillers, which is how I plan to use mine.

These hearts are so versatile, and I'd love to see all the creative ways that people embellish them and use them to decorate their homes. If you liked this tutorial, I hope you'll stop by Gwenny Penny and check out some of my other projects. Have a Happy Valentine's Day, and thanks for having me Kindra!

I can picture these hearts used as ornaments on a mini tree or even attach one to a Valentine gift. So cute!!  I was so priviledged to be a part of Gwen's Haul Out the Holly event this past Christmas. It inspired me to create the Be Mine Bonanza event! And I know you will feel inspired after seeing Gwen's projects! Also, go check out her new sewing closet! Wow! It makes me want to tackle my work space and make it pretty again! Thank you so much, Gwen, for sharing your Painted Muslin Hearts with us today!

Be Mine Bonanza: Day 1-I Love My Husband Shirt

Welcome to the 1st day of Be Mine Bonanza! For the next 7 days, 7 fun Valentine Themed Tutorials will be featured here at At Home With K. I just want to thank the 6 other guest bloggers for joining me on this event! I really appreciate you sharing your time and talent with us!

I hope we all will inspire you to CREATE!

Today, I'll be showing you how to make a personalized t-shirt-love style.

I actually got this idea from a friend couple of ours. They both have shirts that say "I love my husband/wife" They're cute and I have always wanted one for myself to 'display' my love for my hubby. I saw hubby's face light up when I told him what I was making for the Be Mine Bonanza. So I know he appreciates it!

    What you need:

    1. Freezer Paper
    2. Exacto Knife (unless you have a cricut or silhouette machine...lucky you)
    3. cutting mat
    4.cardboard
    5. Acrylic craft paint-any color
    6. Textile Medium
    7. Stencil Brush
    8. Iron
    9. Pre-Washed t-shirt

First, you print off what you want your t-shirt to say.

    I recommend:
    I love my husband.
    I love my wife.
    I love my boyfriend.
    I love my girlfriend.

You can easily print this off your computer in any font/size.

Then place a piece of freezer paper right over the print out and start cutting out the letters with the exacto knife. The freezer paper is kind of transparent for easy cutting or tracing. Make sure to have your cutting mat or a piece of cardboard underneath to protect your surface.

After you have it all cut out, iron down the the freezer paper (slick side down) on the area of your shirt where you want your saying to be. Make sure to iron down the letter edges well so the paint does not bleed under the stencil.

When you are cutting, you will notice that you will have to keep the inside areas of some letters. Like the b,a,d shown in the below picture. Just don't lose them while you are cutting. After ironing down the main stencil, go back and place these small pieces inside the letters and iron them down as well (just make sure sticky side down).

You can use fabric paint if you have it on hand. But for this tutorial, I used what I got.  I have lots of craft paint and in order for me to paint on fabric, I need to use a Textile Medium to make it into a "fabric paint". You mix 2 parts craft paint to 1 part textile medium. I found this small bottle for $1.50 at Hobby Lobby (can get it cheaper with a 40% off coupon). It can be found in the craft paint area.

After I mixed my paint and textile medium, then I'm ready to stencil.
Place a small piece of cardboard between the front and back of the shirt...to prevent the paint from bleeding to the opposite side of your shirt.
A little paint goes a long way when stenciling. After you dab your paint brush into the paint, take off the excess paint by pouncing the bristles onto a scrap piece of paper. You don't want the paint to bleed under the stencil. You can always go back for a second coat if you don't think it's enough.

After it's dry, you peel back your stencil. Heat set the paint by going over it lightly with an iron. This will make it permanent.

There you have it, a fun little project to show the one you love that you care!
    I love you, hubby!

Make sure to come back each day this week for more fun Valentine project ideas!

I'm linking up with a few of these linky parties this week.

    Mousepad Makeover and Award

If you haven't checked out my guest post over at Chicks Dig Deals from last Friday, go HERE. I show you how I made some "art" from an old shirt of mine.

Well I still have more shirt to go around. LOL And these puppies that gaze at me while  I'm on the computer are getting on my nerves. My mom actually gave me this mousepad several years ago...it was an extra she had.

It was showing it's age with some of the fabric coming up on the corner and marker marks...I'm sure from my kids.

So I got out more of my shirt material and cut a little bigger piece than the mouse pad itself. Then I "painted" on modge podge on the pad. Then I placed the fabric down on the glued pad. I put a couple heavy encyclopedias on on top and let dry over night.

The next day I cut the extra fabric that was over hanging the pad on all sides.

Now I have a new mousepad to enjoy while blogging. A super easy project! Now what else can I do with my shirt? I still have more left...

Last week, I was awarded a Stylish Blogger Award from Lovely Crafty Home.
    Thank you so much Rachael!

Rachael is a great DIYer!! I love her projects! And she has a great weekend Linky Party!

    Lovely Crafty Home

Be sure to check her blog out!

With this award, I am to list 7 things about myself.
    Well here I go...

    1. I love being a stay-at-home mom! Never thought I would until I had kids of my own. There are so many little moments that I have experienced with my sons while staying home that a paycheck will never replace.
    2. I'm not a runner. I don't even have an athletic bone in my body. But within the last year, my hubby and I have signed up for runs in the area. It keeps us motivated to stay healthy. It's fun to share this "hobby" with my hubby. And it sure makes me feel like I have an "athlete" in me somewhere. LOL We have signed up for a 1/2 marathon (13.1 miles) coming up on May 1st. I am excited and scared at the same time!

    3. I'm a night nurse on the weekends. I would rather be staying home and sleeping though...Mondays are real rough for me as I have to stay up all day to take care of my 3 year old. Which leads me to #4...

    4. I heart Dave Ramsey. We have been on his plan for 2 years and he has changed our family tree! We have financial goals as a family. And sometimes I whine and complain that I have to go to work and have no sleep...but
"If You Live Like No One Else, Later You Will Live Like No One Else" ~Dave Ramsey

    5. We just became members of new church home this past fall and I have never felt closer to God than I do now. It's amazing how you feel, live, give when you surround yourself with such God loving people!

    6. I'm defnitely a follower, not a leader. I would rather be in a crowd, just listening and taking it all in than to participate. LOL BUT next week I'll be giving a presentation on Decorating on a Budget at a MOPS group. I'm actually looking forward to it and sharing my passion!

    7. I'm not a clean person. It takes all that I have to keep my house clean and organized. I would rather be playing with my sons/hubby or doing a project...which all include making messes.

So there you have it, 7 "interesting" things about myself.

I am supposed to pass this award to 15 other Fabulous bloggers. But have you seen my follow list? I cannot possibly narrow it down to just 15. I think they are all Fabulous! I am inspired each and everyday by such creative women out there. I'm glad to be a part of this community! And if you are reading this, YOU ARE FABULOUS, because you are what keeps me going and inspired to do project after project!
So big HUGS out to you!

Thanks so much for your visits and comments. I appreciate them all so much!

    Giveaway!!

I have another fun giveaway to share with my followers today! CSN Stores contacted me and would love to give one of you a $35 gift certificate to any of their 200+ stores! Woo Hoo!

If you are not familiar with CSN Stores, they sell anything from swing sets to shoes to furniture to cookware...you name it! And a lot of their items have free shipping! That's one of my favorite features!

So just for fun, I went on a virtual shopping trip and 'bought' a few things for myself.

    HERE WE GO.

I'm in love with round mirrors. This would look perfect above my bed!

Pillows. I just can't get enough of pretty pillows.

I'm having some cabin fever with all this snow. Doesn't this just scream SPRING?!

I need a few slipcovers for my furniture as I lighten our home up room by room.

I'm still on the organization kick! Wouldn't these baskets be perfect?! They have dry erase boards on them for easy labeling! Wonderful!

    Aaaah pretty bins.

And I'm just a sucker for baskets. I thought this was super duper cute!

And here I go with spring on my mind. I pictured myself frolicking through my (non-existent) flower garden and gathering some flowers with this cute basket.

And more lighting is always a bonus. Need a couple of these as well for my future living room update.

Really I had to stop there. I could of been there for hours. There was so much that I was oohing and aaahing over at CSN Stores.

To Enter my Giveaway, you must be a FOLLOWER and leave me a comment on this post!

I'll have the giveaway open until Friday, January 28th at 11:59pm (central time). Then I'll announce the winner on Saturday, January 29th. Good Luck!
