Rocking Chair Makeover

My good friend, Julie, passed along an old rocking chair to me. Actually her mom gave it to her to give to me. :)

It was a nice surprise when I saw it sitting in my garage when I came home one night.

So a couple weeks ago I started making it over on a nice warm pre-spring day...but that is when my whole family had the flu and I about passed out. So I went back to bed and it sat 1/2 finished waiting for me.

Finally yesterday I tackled this project.

And here she is today.

I painted the chair with some leftover black paint from my kitchen cabinets.

After it was dry I sanded down the edges with an electric sander. I sanded down the hard to reach areas with just a small piece of sandpaper.
Then I applied MinWax dark walnut stain. I love the richness the stain added.

Don't you like her legs?

I wanted to add a little detail to the chair. Taking advantage of what I had, I used this stencil from my kitchen project.

And stenciled just a small design to the back. I think it adds just a little enough detail without going overboard.

Sshhh...don't tell but she's still "tacky" from the stain.
After it's dry, I'll add a clear spray sealer so we can enjoy it outside.

Cost of my chair and makeover-FREE!
Love those kind.

Tomorrow I'll share another free makeover I whipped up this week.

I've linked up to a few of these fun linky parties.

Itchin' To Get Outside

Here I go again wishin' for spring again. LOL

It's cold outside. Sigh...

I got many outside projects planned for this year. Our yard, deck and house need a little sprucing up. So I'm eagerly waiting for the warmer weather to stay so I can tackle my to-do list.

In the meantime, here's some wonderful outdoor eye candy that I can enjoy.

On my list is to add black shutters our front windows. Love this window box. I have a perfect window to do this to. Now if I can only keep the flowers alive...I have a terrible green thumb.

Adding more seating areas pretty like this is a must also!

Finding thrifty/rusty finds to decorate the outdoors is also on my list. Love this chair.

Our deck needs repainting. I'm thinking a white or light blue/gray color for the floor.

Total dream land space for my yard but still loved this photo!

Other things on my list:
Spring clean our landscaping with cutting down bushes and ornamental grasses
Paint trim on house
Freshen up outdoor decor with paint
Power wash house
Fix up dead patches of grass
Fertilize
Weed prevent our landscaping
Patch and paint retaining wall
Paint front and side doors
Oh and so much more...

Who wants to come over to help? I'll provide some yummy food and drinks!

What do you have on your sprucing up the outdoor list this year?

Guest Post by Ma Nouvelle Mode

First of all, I want to say THANK YOU! to Kindra for featuring my project.  She is one of the nicest bloggers I have met so far and it is a pleasure to 'know' her.

Since starting blogging, it has inspired me to be more creative in a lot of aspects of my life and I have loved it.  I don't have a lot of money to spend or space in my house.  So although it can be more challenging, it is super fun to say 'yes, I made that!  And for like 2 bucks!'  So I am going to share with you my most recent finished project, what I made for my front entry way.  Here it is:

And now for the tutorial, really simple and inexpensive ladies! That is the best part!

Here are the materials I used:
  1. Canvas board (size of your choice)
  2. Black tissue paper
  3. Old book (I used the same one as my last project!)
  4. Modgepodge glue
  5. Hot glue gun and glue
  6. cardboard (not pictured)
  7. I used the letter 's' for the finished project

I started by decopauging the canvas board with the black tissue paper.  Not neatly so it has a personality!  And trust me, I am good at not being neat. Then you let it sit overnight to dry.

Then I proceeded to make a ton of little flowers for the heart.  You cut out a spiral.  It doesn't have to be perfect, but make it a circle, ovals don't work nearly as well.  Start at the outside and curl in.

You will come to the end and it will look like above.  Add glue over the entire base and seal with the remaining flap of paper like below.

Yes, those are my dry hands! I wash the dishes toooooo much!

May I suggest putting on a good movie and bustin' out these bad boys.  I just sat at the table by myself.  Not nearly as fun!
<>gt;><>
Isn't it cute? I am sure you could find a ton of ways to showcase these beauties!

Voila!  My petite fleur!  (I live in France, so I think in French sometimes, sorry!)

I cut out a heart shape on a book page.  I realized it was a bit flimsy so I attached it to a piece of cardboard I cut in the same shape.  So if there were any spaces, it would be another book page.  I glued all the flowers on with hot glue, starting on the outside and moving in to make sure I kept the flower shape.  I stuck them in there as tight as they would go!

I don't have a picture, but I am sure it isn't that hard to figure out, I glued it to the decopauged canvas!  The great part about this project is that the heart could be any shape you want!  Like maybe a little bird, which are popular now, but with a cute material on it instead of the hearts.  It is all left to your style and imagination!

Here is how I used my finished project:

Thank you all for reading along today, I hope you enjoyed the project!  I would love to have you stop over at 'my place' any time!  And thank you again Kindra for putting up this feature, you are awesome!

Thank you so much for guest posting today, Natalia! Isn't this a fun project?! I just love the look of the book page flowers. Natalia started her blog last month but she has shared so many projects, recipes and her wonderful style in such a short amount of time. She also started a new linky party on Mondays called Projects in Progress, that I hope to link up to soon.

So go check out her out and show her some comment love!

Terrific Under Ten Tuesday #6

Update: Someone has a blog crush on At Home With K. Go check it out over at Ma Nouvelle Mode!

We have this plain wood cabinet that serves as our pantry in the kitchen.

It's nothing special and it serves it's purpose. I debated back and forth to paint it or not. But I kind of like not having everything painted in my house. LOL So I left it alone.

Hobby Lobby had 1/2 off knobs last week. So I grabbed a fun pair for $1.50 each to add a little Bling to the piece.

They are cute close up with a nice crackle finish. So much better than the wood knobs it had before.

An easy update for $3!

Fun Finds

Happy Spring! It's officially here! Yay!

Right now I'm wishing for a lot of R & R and me on a warm beach somewhere. This "illness" has taken the life out of me and I'm slowly recovering. Little tasks even suck the energy out of me. Don't know what the deal is.

But a vacation is the last thing that can happen. I'm a single parent this week as my hubby is away on business in the beautiful state of Tennessee. Hubby told me it's so pretty down there! I told him to say hello to Dave Ramsey while he was down there. A lot of people think of country music when they think of Nashville, I think of a financial superstar. :) Hubby says he'll be a little busy.

I wanted to show some pics of the items I bought at the Simply Bungalow Open House for myself.

My big purchase was this fun galvanized mailbox. The shape is different from ordinary mailboxes out there.

As I was looking it over at the store, I saw that it read The Deshler Mailbox Company. Remember my Deshler plate story?

If you are new follower/reader to At Home With K, Deshler Nebraska is my hometown. I was pretty sure that my Deshler didn't have a mailbox company but I bought it anyway...it's still fun having "Deshler" on it.

As I did more research on Google, I found out that The Deshler Mailbox Company is from Deshler, Ohio. I have a few Ohio blog friends...anyone heard of Deshler, OH?

I found this old illustrated cover on EBay for $37. And there's my round mailbox. :)

I love the 2 tone color it has.
(The chalk on the wood is from my boys)

I also got this fun bird that I have been eyeing since my first visit to Simply Bungalow. I snatched him up as soon as I saw him.

I also got these fun spring tags. They will be fun to add to my spring decor here and there.

I didn't realize it until I was making my purchases that these fun tags are made by Barb from Thoughtful Images Ink. I was so excited when I realized that! Barb has submitted a few links to my Terrific Under Ten in the past and I've gotten to know her through Facebook. So that makes the tags even more special. :)

I hope you all have a great day. I'm off for a nap. Come back tomorrow for Terrific Under Ten Tuesday! Can't wait to see what you share!

Also today is the LAST DAY TO VOTE for At Home With K!!
Thank you so much!
